Decatur Alabama Roost
There is an annual 100,000+ Purple Martin Roost in Decatur, Alabama. This roost is different than most roosts, in that, instead of being in trees, on a bridge, or at a power plant, etc, this roost happens on a small island of tall weeds in the middle of the Tennessee River. Fred Ashmore (Decatur, Al), who provided most of the pictures you see, Brian Naughton (Huntsville, Al), and Brad Biddle (Albertville, Al) have done an excellent job this year of documenting and promoting the Decatur roost this year(2004) for all of the Martin community, who cannot travel to Decatur, to enjoy and witness. They have gotten a local TV station to come and do a story on the roost to inform the local people of what was happening. Go to http://www.whnt19.com Look for, or do a search for, Birds Spotted on StormCenter 19 Pinpoint Doppler Radar to look for the news story done by WHNT Channel 19. There is also a slide show of pictures that Fred Ashmore took.

The following picture was taken by Brad Biddle. It shows the small island of Alligator Weeds in the Tennessee River at Decatur, Alabama where the Purple Martins are roosting. The small patch of Alligator Weed between the concrete bridge in the foreground and the island of trees in the middle of picture is where the birds are roosting.
The following photos were all taken by Fred Ashmore at the Decatur, Al roost over the past few weeks.
