PVC Gourd Rack
John Petersen
Stidham, OK
This Gourd Rack will hold 24 gourds and costs less than 40 dollars to build.
It was built in 2 hours time and is easily raised and lowered with a rope and
pulley system.
First go to you local lumber yard or plumbing supply and pick up these items.
20 feet of 1 inch schedule 40 pvc pipe
2 feet of 2 inch schedule 40 pvc pipe
8- 1 inch 90degree elbows
4- 1 inch tees
2- 2 inch pvc crosses
4- 2 inch to 1 1/4 adapters
4 -1 1/4 to 1 inch adapters
1 small can of pvc clear cleaner and glue.
Take out your hacksaw or saw you will use for cutting the pvc and cut the following lengths of 1 inch pvc pipe.
Part A - 4 pieces of 1 inch pipe 12 inches long.
Part B - 4 pieces of 1 inch pipe 29 inches long.
Part C - 4 pieces of 1 inch pipe 18 inches long.
Part D - 8 -1 inch pvc elbows.
Part E - 4 - 1 inch tee.
Part F - 4 - 2 inch to 1 1/4 reducer.
Part G - 1 - 1 1/4 to 1 inch reducer.
Okay we are ready to build. Always remember to clean your pipe and fittings before
cementing them together. Take the 2 inch piece of pipe 24 inches long and put the 2
inch crosses on. One on each end of pipe. When I built mine I made the crosses offset
or one pointing one way and one the other. Then take Part F and Part G and glue them
together, they both go into the cross, glue them in. When you are done you will have
gone from a 2 inch hole to a 1 inch hole in the crosses.
Now I would cut all the pieces of 1 inch pipe, parts A thru C, to the specs above.
Now, for the assembly of the rack, I would do the top firs, finish it, then turn it over
and do the bottom.
Take Part A and glue into the 1 inch reducer. Do this on both sides.
Then take 2- Part C's, the 18 inch pieces, and glue them to Part E or
the tee, glue them opposite off each other with the tee pointing down.
Now comes the fun part. Sit the 2 inch pipe with the cross on it on a
level surface. Take the tee and Part C's and put a level on it or eyeball
it for being level and glue them to Part A the 12 inch piece. This is the
hardest part if you put a lot of cement on the joint you can twist it to
get it level. After you have done this go to the other side and repeat the
same steps as above.
Now take 1 part B, the 29 inch piece, and glue 2 elbows (Part D) on it. If you
lay this down on your work surface which is flat the elbows will be even pointing
both one direction. Now, glue the piece you just put together on to the end of 2-18
inch pieces or Part C. Repeat this on the other end of Part C.
You have finished the top part now, repeat the above sequences and you will have your
rack assembled. Take your drill and drill 4 holes spaced evenly apart down the
sides and 2 holes on the ends. I use a quarter inch drill bit . The support pieces in
the middle will hold one gourd on each side also. At the top of the 2 inch cross, on
top, take and cut a notch in the middle of one side for the rope to catch on to keep
the rack from turning in the wind. Now, after you are finished you can paint the rack
with a primer paint, then a finished white spray paint. This keeps the UV rays from the
sun from damaging the PVC.
I use a 20 ft pole, preferably thick wall conduit 1 1/2 pole. This size pole will suffice in holding
this rack up.
