Satellite Colony at Work
At the request of my chain of command, I have added a gourd rack at my workplace. They allowed me to get what I wanted. My choice was a Gemini rack from Creative Universe Enterprises. This is a high quality rack that was well designed and well built. The ease of putting this rack together was fantastic. It is lightweight, yet very strong and durable. I equipped it with 24 Supergourds. 12 supergourds have my WDC 3" tunnels on and the other 12 have my Excluder II entrances on them. Once I have this colony established, I will switch all gourds to Excluder II entrances.
As of 5/7/10, there were several nest. There is one ASY pair that got things started. There were at least nine birds present at this new site, nest building is going on. A great success for a first year site.
The work site colony ended up with 10 nesting pair for its first season. When I did my last nest check, there were a total of 39 eggs and/or hatchlings. Because of the age of the oldest hatchling, which were naturally from the ASY pair, nest checks have been suspended until all the birds are gone. As far as entrance choices, 6 pair chose the WDC and 4 pair chose the Excluder II.

This rack has redundant safety features. There is a safety pin about 6' high in case the rack falls and it has a automatic brake winch. The predator guard comes off in seconds.
First clutch at worksite colony, first egg laid 5/8/10 by an ASY pair. 12 birds observed flying around during nest check.
