Martins Cannot Read and do not know what is safe for them as a nesting colony site. Throwing money into an expensive Martin setup cannot guarantee success, however taking a cheaper approach sometimes can. Coastal Carolina Purple Martin Society This is a newly formed group of people dedicated not only to the welfare of Purple Martins in general, but particularly the preservation and protection of the Purple Martins at the William B. Umstead Bridge at Manns Harbor, NC Please consider joining as they need all the help they can get, both locally and nationally, to get more done to prevent further deaths of OUR Purple Martins who roost there. I would say that most birds raised in Southern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina congregrate their before their long and arduous journey to Brazil. Annual membership dues are $25.00 and, of course, any amount above that would be greatly appreciated and put to good use. They plan on hiring an intern during the 2008 season.
